Windows Vista comes in 8 Version!

Seems like windows users will have a lot of choice and sysadmins a lot of headache. According to Paul Thurrott’s Supersite for Windows, there will be at least 8 different versions of windows vista.

Windows Starter 2007: Aimed at beginner computer users in emerging markets who can only afford a low cost PC. As with the XP version, Windows Starter 2007 (note that it’s not branded as Window Vista) is a subset of Vista Home Basic, and will ship in a 32-bit version only (no 64-bit x64 version). Starter 2007 is analogous to XP Starter Edition. This version will only be sold in emerging markets.

Windows Vista Home Basic: A simple version of Windows Vista that is aimed at single PC homes. Windows Vista Home Basic is roughly analogous to Windows XP Home Edition

Windows Vista Home Premium: Whole home entertainment and personal productivity throughout the home and on the go. Windows Vista Premium is similar to XP Media Center Edition, except that it adds numerous other features and functionality, including Tablet PC support.

Windows Vista BUsiness: A powerful, reliable and secure OS for businesses of all sizes. Windows Vista Business is roughly analogous to XP Pro today. This version is aimed at business decision makers and IT managers and generalists.

Windows Vista Small Business: Designed for small businesses without IT staff.

Windows Vista Enterprise: Optimized for the enterprise, this version will be a true superset of Windows Vista Business.

Windows Vista Ultimate: The best operating system ever offered for a personal PC, optimized for the individual. Windows Vista Ultimate is a superset of both Vista Home Premium and Vista Business., so it includes all of the features of both of those product versions, plus adds Game Performance Tweaker with integrated gaming experiences, a Podcast creation utility (under consideration, may be cut from product), and online “Club” services (exclusive access to music, movies, services and preferred customer care) and other offerings (also under consideration, may be cut from product).

N Editions: Windows Vista for the European market, in order to meet the requirements of an antitrust ruling there. Windows Vista N Editions–Vista Home N and Vista Business N–will mirror the Vista Home Basic and Vista Business versions, respectively, but will not include Windows Media Player and other media-related functionality.

There’s whole lot of detail in Windows Vista Product Editions Preview

Ten Reasons to Buy Windows Vista

As the latest version of Windows called Vista will be out on the stores later this year. Michael Desmond wrties about Ten Reasons to Buy Windows Vista

1. Security, security, security: Windows XP Service Pack 2 patched a lot of holes, but Vista takes security to the next level.

2. Internet Explorer 7: IE gets a much-needed, Firefox-inspired makeover, complete with tabbed pages and better privacy management.

3. Righteous eye candy: For the first time, Microsoft is building high-end graphics effects into Windows.

4. Desktop search: Microsoft has been getting its lunch handed to it by Google and Yahoo on the desktop, but Vista could change all that.

5. Better updates: Vista does away with using Internet Explorer to access Windows Update, instead utilizing a new application to handle the chore of keeping your system patched and up-to-date.

6. More media: Over the years, one of the key reasons to upgrade versions of Windows has been the free stuff Gates and Company toss into the new OS, and Vista is no exception.

7. Parental controls: Families, schools, and libraries will appreciate the tuned-up parental controls, which let you limit access in a variety of ways.

8. Better backups: Windows Vista boasts a much-improved backup program that should help users avoid wholesale digital meltdowns.

9. Peer-to-peer collaboration: The Windows Collaboration module uses peer-to-peer technology to let Vista users work together in a shared workspace.

10. Quick setup: Beta code alert: There are some Vista features I hope dearly for even though they haven’t been built yet.

There are things that might give you a pause before plunging into Vista i.e cost, anti-virus, hardware spec and learning curve.

RT: Request Tracker installation CentOS 4

We are currently evaluating the Request Tracker (RT) in our office. Request Tracker is a ticketing system which enables to efficiently manage problems, tasks, issues, and requests submitted by users. RT is an online ticketing system tightly integrated with email. It’s written in Object-Oriented perl and utilizes MySQL database. RT manages key tasks such as the identification, prioritization, assignment, resolution and notification. For guides and reading materials there’s a book RT Essentials published by Oreilly and some online documents for installation and getting started. I tried to install RT in CentOS 4 with this installation guide, which is for RedHat Enterprise 4 and should work for CentOS 4, Fedora 4 and Whitebox Linux 4. But got stuck with 4 perl modules, without which the RT didn’t function well. I did try to force install the dependencies from MCPAN shell but the RT wouldn’t work properly with my forced installation.

So, this is what I did. I followed Installation Guide of RHEL4 and on No. 6) Install RT… I downloaded some extra RPMS and installed them. If you are having the same problem as me, the following step No. 6 can help you. It has worked for me so hopefully it’ll work for you too (no guarantee or warranty :)). Good luck…

New trojan/virus targets Mac OS X

The first Trojan targeting Mac OS X (OSX/Oompa-A) is in the wild but seems it’s not that critical according to this site.

You cannot be infected by this unless you do all of the following:
1) Are somehow sent (via email, iChat, etc.) or download the “latestpics.tgz” file
2) Double-click on the file to decompress it
3) Double-click on the resulting file to “open” it
…and then for non-Admin users, it fails to infect most applications.

Most of the antivirus companies have released updates to detect the threat and here is Safety tips from Apple for Mac users.

Is Apple switching to Windows?

I’m thinking about switching to Apple but what’s Apple switching to… Windows? PC Magazine has an article Will Apple Adopt Windows? John C. Dvorak writes that Yakov Epstein, a professor of psychology at Rutgers University, is convinced that the process had already begun.

Epstein made four observations. The first was that the Apple Switch ad campaign was over, and nobody switched. The second was that the iPod lost its FireWire connector because the PC world was the new target audience. Also, although the iPod was designed to get people to move to the Mac, this didn’t happen. And, of course, that Apple had switched to the Intel microprocessor.

Breaking the news would be very difficult but…

Luckily, Apple has a master showman, Steve Jobs. He’ll announce that now everything can run on a Mac. He’ll say that the switch to Windows gives Apple the best of both worlds. He’ll say this is not your daddy’s Windows. He’ll cajole and cajole, and still hear a few boos. But those will be the last boos he’ll hear, for then the Mac will be mainstream.

Tech Warning and Tech Gifts for Valentines Day

BBC has a warning over valentine’s e-cards. Just beware and don’t open the e-cards from your secret admirer. In the past there had been an increase of virus, spam and spyware during valentine’s day.

“Just the receipt of an e-card can be a huge threat. Some people will ignore these but for others, curiosity draws them to making a simple click on an innocent looking advert, and unknowingly our Romeo or Juliet exposes the organisation to web-borne security threats.”

Previous viruses, like 2000’s Love Bug, have played on this tendency.

The best defense is not to open any unsolicited valentine’s-related messages.

On the brighter side Shortflip has some recommendations for Valentines Day Tech Gifts.

Flowers, candy, jewelry and stuffed animals are probably the most received gifts on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. For the more creative and geeky of us out there, Valentine’s Day gives us the opportunity to truly show your girl how much you care for her by shelling out some cash on a useful tech gadget.

They recommend iPods, Cell phones, Digital cameras and other gadgets but also warn the geeks:

Be careful though: giving a good tech gift can serve as a constant reminder to your thoughtfulness or an unwanted token of your geekiness.

Why I started blogging?

The blogging phenomenon has swept the Internet today. According to Technorati, there are now over 27.2 Million blogs, the blogsphere is doubling in size every 5 and half months and it is now over 60 times bigger than it was 3 years ago. On average a new weblog is created every second of every day. I started blogging (not seriously) on 2003 when my boss wanted to have a blog of his own and told me that Movable Type was a popular software. I remember trying WordPress , Greymatter and some others but finally we stayed with the Movable Type. At that time I created a blog of my own nir.hkisl.net (which is redirected to this site now). I used to mainly post links to the technical news that I found interesting and those I wanted to read in spare time. I would go back to my blog and read them later. It was like my private delicious bookmarks.

The Age: Buddha Boy has nation guessing: holy or hoax?

The Age has an article about the Buddha Boy, Buddha Boy has nation guessing: holy or hoax? . They’ve some interesting updates.

For the past nine months, the 15-year-old has sat, meditating at the base of a peepal tree in Nepal’s Bara District, without food, water, sleep or the need to use the toilet. If that was not remarkable enough, on January 19, he spontaneously combusted, burning off the clothes he has worn for nine months but leaving no scars. Lest there be doubters, his followers caught that combustion on video and plan to present the footage, seen by The Age, at a news conference in Kathmandu, soon.

A boyhood friend of Ram Bahadur Bomjan, Prem Lama gets to communicate with the Buddha boy ocationally.

Prem is the only one who goes within five metres of the tapaswi and whom he very occasionally communicates through. “Whenever we talk, it’s a one-way conversation. He doesn’t ask questions,” said Prem.

There are believers as well as doubters.

Outside his own village, many are doubters. However, Upendra Lamichhane, a local reporter for the leading Nepalese paper Kantipur who has visited the site 10 times, believes the villagers are “too innocent” to pull off such a hoax.

I hope the new photo of fire erupting from his chest and video of his burning clothes will be available for us soon. I personally don’t see a 15 year old boy giving up everything worldly just to fool people. But it would be very unfortunate if his supporters start creating some staged miracles.

Nirlog Store

Nirlog Store

Update: I’ve stopped using Associate-O-Matic and am currently trying aStore for amazon associates.

Nirlog Store is an associate store with references to products from Amazon.com Store. I’ve built this store with a very popular Amazon Associate program and a cool Associate-O-Matic software. Associate-O-Matic is very easy to use which requires no programming at all on users side. They offer Associate-O-Matic Lite free of charge with some limitation and also will take 10% of the income generated. This store is sort of beta right now, I’ll test it for a while. If it works well then I think I’ll buy the full version.

You can shop directly at Amazon.com but by using this store you’ll be supporting Nirlog.com. Nirlog Store provides almost every item available at Amazon.com Store and utilizes the same inventory, shipping mechanisms and customer management technology.

Thank you for your support and buy stuffs that matter at Nirlog Store
