39 policemen guarding Buddha Boy

January 10th, 2007 by Niranjan Kunwar

Buddhaboy-Security
UWB has posted this latest photo of the Buddha Boy. Currently 39 policemen are guarding him from 9am to 5pm. Also they’re reporting that the number of followers coming to see him has reduced. Less visitors means less disturbance! I think it’s good for him and his cause.

Buddha Boy reappears

December 26th, 2006 by Niranjan Kunwar

Buddha

Ram Bahadur Bomjon, popularly known as Buddha Boy, who disapperead in March this year has been spotted near a dense forest in Pathlaiya nijgadh, on Sunday night. Local hunters, who had been out hunting in the jungle spotted Bomjon first.

Few things we know from media after his reappearance:

He looked slender than before, was in grimy cloths and had long hair flowing down his shoulder.

He was carrying a sharp sword with him and when asked why he needed it, he said he’s carrying it for his own protection.

He claims that he still hadn’t eaten any food, but eats herbs. He wandered around the jungles in Bara, Parsa and Rautahat districts.

His pervious handlers, the members of the Tapaswi Sewa Samiti, are settling up a place for his meditation nearby the Halkhori Lake in Ratanpuri.

“I am engaged in devotion which will continue for six years,” the boy told reporters.

He doesn’t want the new meditation site to be noisy and wants his followers to keep 10 meters distance.

When asked what to do with the donations that his followers and visitors would make, he urged to do anything with the donations, but keep from engaging in business or misuse.

What do you think about Buddha Boy?

December 11th, 2006 by Niranjan Kunwar

Palden Dorje In Grove-1UWB has posted a recently taken photo of Ram’s mother and sister in No News of Buddha boy but the life goes on…

A significant number of users land in my blog searching for the keywords “buddha boy”, “meditating boy”, “boy with extraordinary powers”, “the boy with divine powers”, “buddha boy update”, “ram bahadur bomjon” and so on… The recent airing of My Shocking Story: The Boy With Divine Powers by Discovery Channel has taken this story to the wider audience. Now more people know about him and are curious about where he might be. Looking at the comments of visitors and emails that I received, I can see there are 4 types of people following his story.

The first type of people are confident that this was/is a hoax. They say it is scientifically impossible for anyone to sit in one place without eating and drinking for such a long time. This was a well planned hoax to deceive innocent people and get their money.

The second group of people believe that he’s holy and divine. One guy reasoned it like this — “You see he has been meditating for 10 months without food and water, and is immune to fire and snake bites. Who do you think he is?”

There’s a third group, who think he’s the reincarnation of Buddha. This reincarnation thought was implanted and made popular by captivating headlines that many mainstream media choose, while Ram was meditating, and after he went missing.

The final fourth group of people are open minded, curious and not exactly sure what’s going on.

I’m one from the fourth group. I’m very deeply interested in this story. I feel something significant is going on here. I think all the attention he got was something he never asked for. I hope he’s safe, in a peaceful place and progressing with his meditation. Like the critics and believers I’m waiting for his appearance after 6 years to see what he has to say.

By the way, what do you think about Buddha boy?

Buddha was not a prince

September 5th, 2006 by Niranjan Kunwar

A newly published book, "The Great Sons of the Tharus: Sakyamuni Buddha and Emperor Asoka", written by Subodh Kumar Singh claims that Buddha did not come from a royal family but a "Tharu" community that today is at the bottom of the social hierarchy in Nepal, living as bonded labourers.

Singh, himself is a Tharu and says ‘The word Tharu comes from Sthabir in Sanskrit, meaning monk or the Buddha. The Tharus are therefore the Buddha’s people.’

In his book, Singh claims that when Buddha came back to his kingdom after attaining enlightenment so many people joined him as followers. But he selected only a few of them and told others to be Buddhists after being indoctrinated by these chosen leaders. These people who became Buddhists were called Stharu, which ‘perverted’ into Tharu, in due course of time. Singh says, Tharus are originally Kshetriyas.

How can human race survive the next hundred years?

July 8th, 2006 by Niranjan Kunwar

Stephen Hawking, the famous British astrophysicist and best-selling author is asking How can human race survive the next hundred years? He asks:

In a world that is in chaos politically, socially and environmentally, how can the human race sustain another 100 years?

As I write this I saw 18645 answers and no doubt there will be more. There’re all sort of answers. Some suggesting to “get rid or the nuclear weapons” where as others think ‘we’ll go underground or to other planets”.

Recently Hawking was here in Hong Kong and he spoke about finding new homes in outer space for human survival because he thinks some disaster might destroy earth. He says:

It is important for the human race to spread out into space for the survival of the species, Life on Earth is at the ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as sudden global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of.

All this reminds me of Year 2012, Wayne Chen is talking about.

The Six Most Feared but Least Likely Causes of Death

July 5th, 2006 by Niranjan Kunwar

A very interesting list of six most common, yet unfounded, causes of death that most Americans fear of. I think the list applies to Non-Americans as well.

Just the thought of dying of airplane crashes, shark attacks or being murdered makes us anxious but we tend to ignore the actual most common causes of death like tobacco, poor diet and physical inactivity or alcohol consumption.

20 things everyone needs to know

June 10th, 2006 by Niranjan Kunwar

A very useful guide from experts on issues like how to sleep, how to listen, how to negotiate, how to shave, how to apply lipstick and so on. These are the 20 things everyone needs to know (link to mirror). Here is the original link to the article (requires registration).

I think I need to follow the advice on how to sleep :) . I’m getting around 5 to 7 hrs. of daily sleep but feel it’s not balanced. Last night was an extreme case. Watched the World Cup opening match between Germany and Costa Rica till 2:00am and then Kasauti (Indian tele-serial that never ends and my wife loves it) till 3:00am. So, I’m planning to make a fixed 8 hrs. sleeping habit. Also here’s a link to a study, which finds that sleep deprivation costs Japan’s economy 30 bln dollars a year. Talking about sleep; here’s an excellent suggestion from Steve Pavlina on How to Become an Early Riser and his follow up article, with extra details How to Become an Early Riser - Part II.

Discovery Channel - My Shocking Story: The Boy With Divine Powers

June 5th, 2006 by Niranjan Kunwar

Looks like Discovery Channel is going to put a stop to our curiosity on whether the Buddha Boy was eating or not during his meditation. They’ll be airing My Shocking Story: The Boy With Divine Powers on Thursday 29 June, 10pm. But this is only for viewers in UK at this moment. If there are any readers from UK interested in Buddha Boy please leave a comment after watching the story.

For the first time ever, cameras have been allowed beyond the 50 metre fence that guards Ram. Filming him 24/7, we will be able to see if he leaves the tree or is somehow getting food and water. Doctors will also view the footage and give their views on what is happening to his body and how he might be enduring what is deemed physically impossible.

Thanks to Wayne for the link.

Update: You can watch the full documentary in Dailymotion
