Top Open Sources
January 9th, 2006 by Niranjan Kunwar
The Independent has an article Open source websites: All change on the internet that lists out the best open source websites where users can change the content (according to the authors Ana Kronschnabl and Tomas Rawlings). The list goes as following:
- Wikipedia
Firefox
Open Office
Bittorrent
MediaWiki
Xvid
pHpBB Bulletin Boards
Outfoxed
dyne:bolic
GIMP
Apache
SourceForge
The authors surely had a hard time to make this list because there are so many good open source projects that changed the internet. I think they’re missing some very important open source projects, Apache does come in their list but there are other softwares that make Apache a very powerful web platform. Instead of only Apache I think it would be more appropriate to include LAMP in the list. LAMP is an acronym for:
Linux: operating system. Very popular for servers because it’s open, secure, stable and have excellent performance.
Apache: the web server. More than 68 percent of web servers are running on Apache.
MySQL: database management system. One of the fastest and stable and database system.
Perl/PHP/Python: scripting Languages. They make the web interactive.
